E58: Juneteenth

Juneteenth was a sacred holiday in the black community. It was a “if you know, you know” thing. However, with Juneteenth becoming a federal holiday in 2021, we at ALS2WA have one question: Why? Did we really need governmental approval to celebrate something we’ve been celebrating for over 100 years? And with the Juneteenth Ice Cream foolishness, there’s the risk of it being commercialized and prioritized like other cultural holidays– St. Patrick’s Day and Cinco de Mayo, for example. Join us on the couch as we get real and raw about the backlash, controversy and divisiveness of Juneteenth becoming a federal holiday, the implications and risks of Juneteenth becoming mainstreamed, pandering to the black community, our personal experiences, and more. Sips definitely get real on this one!

What do you think about Juneteenth becoming a federal holiday? Did you/do you celebrate Juneteenth?
